February 2009 Engineers Week

Mr. Peck began by highlighting the somber reality of Hawaii’s uniquely high petroleum consumption, placing it in both a national and global context. He went on to stress the tremendous potential of renewable energy in the islands, estimated at 150% of the current installed capacity. The Hawaii Clean Energy Initiative’s goals are numerous; with the first being to achieve a 70% clean energy economy for the State of Hawaii within a generation. “The primary barriers to reaching this goal are not technical or financial; they are policy-driven,” Mr. Peck said. Finally, he laid out a comprehensive approach to address policies regarding electricity generation and delivery, efficiency standards, and transportation. SAME Honolulu January 2009 Highlights

January 13th, 2009 - William Kucharski, PE, the Vice President of Operations for AMEC's Pacific Region gave a talk of the Environment impact of the 1991 Iraq invasion of Kuwait. As the Iraqis retreated in 1991, they blew up all of Kuwait's 748 oil wells and released millions of barrels of crude oil onto the desert mantle and Arabian Gulf. While some recovery actions were taken immediately after the oil fires were put out, millions of barrels of oil contamination remained on the surface of the Kuwait desert and on the shoreline of the Gulf. The presentation summarized the results of the United Nations Compensation Commission (UNCC) funded investigations and discussed the logistical and environmental challenges of the clean-up program.
